Broadway – Yes it is totally worth all the hype!

Broadway – Yes it is totally worth all the hype!

I have had the opportunity to dabble in community theatre for a few years, and have grown to love and appreciate the whole experience! I never in a million years thought I would ever be a community thespian, as it had never crossed my mind in the past. It wasn’t until I met husbae and he challenged me to audition for productions so that we can perform together… me on stage, him… the musical director. Well, it was the start of something GREAT! I have done The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Young Frankenstein, Curtains, & Man of La Mancha. With that said, I understand wholeheartedly the work, time, dedication, and MONEY that goes into producing a musical. To finally be introduced to Broadway Shows… the Paramount of theatrical productions… I was in for one of the most special treats I could ever experience!  My broadway experience starts below…

The very first Broadway Show that I have had the pleasure to see was “An American In Paris” at The Palace Theatre. I have never in my life witnessed anything so marvelous! My mouth was open from the Overture to the final closing of the grand drape. It was everything that I have experienced in community theatre on several doses of steroids! The singing, acting, dancing, music, scenes, scene changes… all of it was just PERFECT! For the ticket prices, I wouldn’t expect anything less! Needless to say, I was SOLD on the hype of experiencing a Broadway production.

Once On This Island (The Circle in the Square theatre) – the Story, costumes , set design, singing and dancing had me in a trance. Asaka (Mother Earth), Agwe (God of water), Erzulie (Goddess of love), and Papa Ge (minion of Death) deliver an absolutely breathtaking performance.

The Color Purple (The Bernard B. Jacob’s Theatre) – the vocal talent ALONE (Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Hudson, Danielle Brooks) took this production of this Classic, Iconic Movie to another level!

Hades Town (The Walter Kerr Theatre) – I fell in love with this show because it is based on a classic greek tragedy featuring Orpheus and Eurydice, and the sneaky Hades. Definitely one of my favorites.

Some Like It Hot (The Sam Shubert Theatre) – Christian Borle and J. Harrison Ghee brought the house DOWN with their outstanding, over the top performance as members of an all-female big band.

The Phantom of the Opera (The Majestic Theatre) – As Opulent and Grandiose as you would imagine, this tragic tale of love and obsession, to this day reigns as the longest running Broadway show, and I now understand why. The Chandelier Scene was EVERYTHING!

The Book Of Mormon (The Eugene O’Neill Theatre) – This production will have you in Stitches as the 2 main characters (mismatched mormon missionaries) are sent to Uganda to bring some of the locals into the Mormon religion.

Death Becomes Her (The Lunt-Fontanne Theatre) – OMG this one was a real treat! If you loved the movie, you would absolutely love this musical! The Acting, Singing, Set Design, Costumes, Dancing… EVERY SINGLE DETAIL was top tier! This one has become one of my favorites.

Gypsy (The Majestic Theatre) – WOW! Wow wow wow wow wow wow! Audra McDonald’s performance of “The mother of all roles” leaves you BREATHLESS, and Appreciative! She left every ounce of Momma Rose’s heart felt emotion on that stage! Every emotion was so overwhelmingly felt! I am so honored to have been in the presence of the most awarded performer in Tony history! Bravo Audra BRAVO!

If you are EVER planning a trip to the big apple, do me a favor and treat yourself to a Broadway show! It will be well worth it I PROMISE! What next great broadway show will I be seeing next? You will just have to wait and see.

James
