My love for reading started years ago in elementary school and it is one of those things that have stayed with me through the years. The first book that I remember reading that stands out in my mind as being a really really good book is Zora Neale-Hurston’s Their Eyes were watching God.
Janie’s 3 tumultuous marriages (and the gossip and rumors amongst the town folk) really puts you in your feelings, both good and bad… but ultimately, for me, the final marriage ended up being that “once in a lifetime” love affair that ended up being cut too short.
I have read many genres of books, ranging from thrillers, fiction, horror, sci-fi, and fantasy. I haven’t quite made the transition over to audio books yet, and I don’t think I will. There’s just something about flipping the pages of the book and being in suspense and on the edge of your seat and being relieved with the turn of the page. Books are able to capture feelings, emotions, and descriptions better than anything, in my opinion…
While waiting at the airport, or on the actual flight, I am probably going to be reading something. I just can’t help myself. My leisure reading started off heavily into the fantasy genre by reading all of the Harry Potter series. We have seen the movies, but without a doubt, the books are far more better and capture more than can ever be presented in movies. By the end of the series, Harry, Hermione, Ron and all of the other characters were practically family.
The same can be said about the Twilight series and us totally losing ourselves in the lives of Bella, Edward, and Jacob. This series is the first series of books that I remember actually losing sleep over because I simply could not put the books down. It was also my first time really experiencing and diving deep into the world of vampires.
My reading journey continued to evolve when I discovered Stephen King and Dean Koontz. I immediately became an avid reader fan and have read 25 of Stephen King’s books and 11 of Dean Koontz books. I had never read anything like this genre before and it literally kept me wanting more and more. The mind of Stephen King and the stories he has written boggled my mind at times! Dean Koontz’s One Door Away From Heaven is one of the best books that I have ever read. Read it and see why.
Further evolving my reading journey, I craved something else. That’s when I discovered my black authors. I can easily say that most of my reading journey has been spent reading their works. I started with Mary B. Morrison and The soulmate dissipate series. Jada and Wellington took me on an emotional rollercoaster. It was at this point, I knew a lot of my money would be spent purchasing MANY books from this genre. I soon fell in love with Mary Monroe, Kimberla Lawson Roby (Reverend Curtis Black was a MESS!!!!!!!!), J.D. Mason, Eric Jerome Dickey, Omar Tyree, E. Lynn Harris, Sistah Souljah, Terry McMillan, & Zane (Oooooooooh My Gaaaaaawd! What kind of sexually liberated kind of thinking did I stumble upon when I started reading her novels!)
Venturing back into the romantic/thriller genre, The 50 Shades trilogy captured my attention and quite possibly ended up being one of the best series that I have ever read. There is just something about Ana and Christian and their love for each other, their ups and downs, and their… magnetism… that really ends up being a love affair for the ages.
The most recent book that I have read and thoroughly enjoyed is The Color of Heaven by Julianne Maclean. This one took me from the highest of the highs down to the lowest of the lows and back again. It was a total emotional rollercoaster that had me hooked from the opening lines… had me in a choke hold.
I will post more about my reading adventures soon. Whatever your favorite genre, I encourage you to pick up a book or your tablet and dive into a truly amazing experience. What are your favorite books? Which books do you suggest that I read?
