If you know me, you know that one of my favorite things is FOOD! There is just something about the mention of food that makes my back sing and dance. LOL!!! But on a serious note, a healthy diet is absolutely important. I advocate for healthy diets and healthy eating with my patients everyday regarding diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity. Feed your body good, and it will treat you good. However, there are those times that I want and NEED to treat myself and indulge in a comforting, fatty, tasty treat. Below are my top 10 Guilty Pleasure foods.
Number 1 – Pizza
Mellow Mushroom’s Mighty Meaty Pizza – when I am craving some really good, handmade pizza, I run to Mellow Mushroom and order their Mighty Meaty pizza. This tasty pizza comes with pepperoni, Italian sausage, ground beef, honey ham, applewood-smoked bacon, all on top of their signature red sauce and stretchy mozzarella cheese. The crispy, chewy dough is stone baked, which in my opinion gives it extra flavor!
Number 2 – Bacon Cheeseburger
Green Truck Pub’s The Whole Farm – this burger here… It is a symphony in my mouth, every time! It is 1/3 lb. grass-fed beef patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, house-made pickles, cheddar cheese, bacon, and a fried egg, all on a toasted bun.
Number 3 – Ice Cream
Blue Bell’s Pecan Pralines n Cream – this is my all time favorite ice cream. I have tried the rest, but this one is the best. It is the homemade style ice cream with praline sauce, swirled into creamy, perfectly sweet ice cream, sprinkled with praline-coated pecans that gives my sweet tooth what it needs with every mouth watering bite.
Number 4 – French Fries
I make a pretty good homemade French fry. My secret is after cutting the potatoes into the desired length and width, I soak them in ice cold water with a little vinegar added for at least an hour before frying. This removes excess starch, prevents discoloration, and makes for a crispier fry. A lot of people like seasoned salt or other seasonings on their fries. As for me, I prefer simple sea salt and a side of ketchup to dip and enjoy.
Number 5 – Fried Chicken
Wilkes Dining Room Fried Chicken – is some of the best fried chicken that I have ever tasted, besides my own grandmother’s recipe. What is it about Grandmother’s fried chicken that just makes you want to scream because it is so good! Mrs. Wilkes is definitely a real treat because of the limited hours of operation and the first come, first serve, family seating style atmosphere. Get there early as the line wraps around the block! If I am looking for some really good fried chicken, FAST, then I am going to hit up Savannah Fried Chicken for their crispy, hot and fresh chicken. If you know, you know.
Number 6 – Philly Cheesesteak
I made the best Philly cheesesteak EVER the other night. It was comforting, moist, juicy, tender, and full of flavor! Ideally, my beef of choice would be ribeye, but it can get kind of pricy. Sirloin is definitely my second choice as it is less expensive and tender. I place my beef in the freezer to make it easier to slice. I also sauté my peppers and onions in butter until the onions are just translucent, and the peppers are not so crunchy (my preference). My seasonings include Seasoned salt, Greek all-purpose seasoning, garlic, salt and pepper. And my cheese of choice is Provolone.
Number 7 – Classic Lays Potato Chips
I don’t want to actually say that I have an addition to Lay’s classic potato chips, but it is damn close to one. This is absolutely my go to brand of potato chips. It’s just something about the crispy, thinly sliced, salty, rich and indulgent crunchy potato chip that is just Classic and timeless. There are plenty of other flavors, but the plain yellow bag gives it to me straight with no chasers needed.
Number 8 – Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
Since I can remember, I have never encountered a desert so thoroughly satisfying as the Krispy Kreme doughnut. The fresh, light, airy dough, with the sweet, sticky glaze is truly one of a kind. Let me tell you, if I drive by a restaurant and I see the “hot” sign lit up, I am probably going to stop and indulge myself.
Number 9 – Sausage Dip and Doritos
Literally 3 ingredients make this delicious dip one of my absolute favorites when sitting on the couch and watching a movie. The ingredients are: cream cheese, Rotel mild diced tomatoes and green chiles, and Jimmy Dean pork sausage. Brown your sausage and season to your liking. Add the Rotel and cream cheese and let it simmer until cheese has melted down nicely. Stir and serve warm. I like to enjoy this dip with Nacho Cheese Doritos
